* Buy links from relevant websites
* Use various anchor
text that reflects your Top Keywords. e.g: "Home Insurance", "USA Home Insurance", "Buy Home Insurance"
* Buy links that point to an important page in your website
e.g: You may want to link directly to the category page of your e-commerce website. If you sell electronics, then you may want to link directly to LCD TVs category.
* Keep your links for at least three months to see results
* Search engines also classify websites based on their IP addresses. The more unique websites with different IP addresses linking to your website, the better.
* Track your results by looking at your web analytics (Google Analytics, Omniture, etc). Look at "organic" traffic referral.
* Use Yahoo's Site Explorer to track the number of inbound links to your site. You can do query such as: "link:http://www.mywebsite.com"
When buying links from link brokers, don't just sign up for any old inventory. Call up Text-Link-Ads, Text-Link-Brokers, Linkworth, LinkExperts, etc. and tell them your budget and that you need to stay under the radar. Let them put together a custom package for you - just send them your top converting terms and judge the links based on how the other link advertisers are ranking for the anchor text they provide. Ask for a few sample clients, check their rankings and do a linkdomain command at Yahoo! to check out the network. If it looks natural and relevant (and under the radar), you can feel more confident about the service. On rule of thumb I use - I ask myself if a visitor to the page might be tempted to click on the link in the same fashion as AdSense or YPN - if the answer is "yes" or "pretty close," it's a good signal.
NOTE: The tactics suggested above may not be 100% white hat according to search engines' guidelines. Use your best judgement and apply only if you feel confident and comfortable with the risks vs. rewards.
